rotechnics are taking place at box
offices around North America,
where the KISS reunion tour —
the original quartet's first outing
together since 1979 — has be-
come the hottest ticket of the
summer, selling out in Chicago,
Cleveland and New York in just
minutes. The 33,000 tickets for
the Tiger Stadium show sold out
in less than an hour, and the tour
is already booked well into the
fall.
Pretty impressive, but Sim-
mons — who still possesses rock's
longest tongue — hardly seems
shocked.
"If I say I'm surprised, it
wouldn't be the truth; for well
over a decade, fans have been
clamoring for it," he says. "But
if I say I'm not surprised, then I
sound cocky and flippant.
"What I know is that we've
buried the Eagles, Rod Stewart
and Garth (Brooks) — all in one
fell swoop. The KISS army is
alive and well."
So is KISS. Frehley and Criss
have cleaned up their drug and
alcohol addictions — a prerequi-
site to even considering a reunion,
according to Simmons and Stan-
ley. And the foursome is in fight-
ing shape, working out daily with
treadmills, weights, aerobics,
even kick-boxing. All of this so the
musicians can tromp around the
stage on high-heeled boots
dressed in stud-covered body ar-
mor. But it's been easy to get back
into made-up character, the
KISSters report.
"It's so natural that it's really
not assuming an identity," Stan-
ley, 44, says. "It's just like putting
on your favorite boots, your fa-
vorite clothes, and saying, 'Now,
where were we when we left off?'
For me, this is not a matter of re-
creating the past as much as pick-
ing up where we stopped."
That, of course, begs the ques-
tion about what the future holds
for KISS. There is another ver-
sion of the band — one with gui-
tarist Bruce Kulick and drummer
Eric Singer — which doesn't wear
makeup and has already record-
ed a new album that's due out
early next year. (KISS Unplugged
was released earlier this year,
and KISS My A**! was released
in 1994).
`There are no rules," Simmons
says. "I can see the non-makeup
KISS existing at the same time.
If Clark Kent and Superman can
pull it off, why can't we?
"We're still as new to this as
anyone," he says. "This is writing
itself as it goes along. All we know
is that we're going out with the
greatest show on Earth. We're go-
ing to tour the world and destroy
it.
"And beyond that, we have no
plans." ❑
