PARENTING page 73 chological conflict is the path to resolution, Ms. Tracht steers clear from advocating any showdowns. In most cases, she observes, the hurt happened many years ago. And, many times, the parent's parent wasn't able to nurture ef- fectively. That's why Ms. Tracht encourages the reader to find ways to nurture the self, includ- ing ways to manage the many stress factors on families. Although Ms. Tracht remains optimistic, she concedes there are "societal toxins" that could have potentially ruinous effects on families. These toxins include vi- olence, self-absorption, lack of dis- cipline and a general disregard for others. 'When parents don't know what it means to nurture, pro- vide security and guidance for c--/ their children, then some of these toxins can do harm," she says. Being raised a Jew, she says, has helped her to grasp the need to rediscover how to nurture one's inner child. "Judaism teaches that every child should be given every chance, that children are precious and must be nurtured to their full potential." In the near future, Ms. Tracht will publish a nurturing exercise workbook to accompany her book. ❑ Re-Nurtitifng: Parenting Your Child As You Re-Parent Your Child Within is available at the Self-Esteem Shop in Birmingham and at Borders.
