if we belonged to a more Con-
servative, or actually an Ortho-
dox congregation," Howard says
— not with animosity, but
respectfully.
Art's other consuming pas-
sion is country music. Each year
he and his father go to the
Grand Ole Opry. They attend
country concerts here, too, and
saw Garth Brooks six years ago
when he was just an opening
act for Kenny Rogers, back
when he had to come out him-
self and peddle his tapes at the
end of the show.
Art has an autographed pic-
ture of himself with the late
Minnie Pearl, and for the past
10 years he has been listening
to the "Grand Ole Opry" on the
radio each weekend. It's a little
hard to hear, coming all the way
from Nashville. "But he'll listen
to the entire show," Howard
says.
Art doesn't know exactly
what got him started on coun-
try music, but there's no ques-
tion about its place in his heart
today. He owns more than 600
cassettes, virtually all of them
country.
They're lined up, all the
Shania Twains and the Judds
and the Charley Prides in cas-
sette boxes above the bed in his
room. He collects calendars, too,
which are hung on the wall
opposite the cassettes.
Of course, the discerning vis-
itor can't help but notice a
Madonna in that tape collection.
Art quickly explains: "A few of
these my brother left when he
moved out."

is Thursday night and the
Dubin family is getting
ready to sit down to one of
Art's famous meals. It's
chicken with mushrooms and
artichokes.
The dining room has a large-
glass window looking out into
the back yard. The 12-foot-long
table, its top a glossy finish, once
belonged to Susan's mother.
This evening, it is set with china
and delicate glasses and elegant
silverware.
Perhaps some families would
be used to the royal treatment
by now, but not this one. There's
an almost reverent silence as
they sit before the chicken, the
bread whose rich, warm frag-
rance fills the house, the herb-
scented pasta, the spinach salad
with tomatoes and eggs and
french-fried onions, and the
steamed asparagus.
Susan is the first to begin eat-
ing. Slowly, thoughtfully, she
swallows some of the chicken.
Art silently awaits the verdict.
Susan smiles, turns to her son
and declares the dish "ab-
solutely delicious." ❑
