"We don't want to deny them
their right to speech," he said of
the Klan rally. "But we do in-
tend to do a lot of chanting to
make sure their message can't
get out."
It's a message Mr. Berry has
preached to every corner of his
home state of Indiana — from
Angola to Marion, Fort Wayne
and Elwood. His hometown of
Newville is so small — about 50
people — it does not even appear
on the screens of telephone di-
rectory assistance operators.

But even in Newville, he has
managed to stir controversy. Ac-
cording to a report in the Indi-
anapolis News, Mr. Berry has
spooked neighbors by playing
scary music at night while an-
nouncing over a microphone the
names of people who are on his
"death list."
"We've let it be known to the
local police that if we actually see
somebody shoot Jeff Berry, they
ain't got a witness," one neighbor
told the newspaper. "He's noth-
ing but a ... bully."

calls it "unpretentious" and "low

"I like the size, and I like the
proximity, and I like the close-
knit sense of community that it
has, just like Huntington Woods,"
she says.

Confidence is high among
Emanu-El's leaders.
Temple President John Jacobs
says that during the past five
years, an equivalent number of
full-dues-paying members joined
the temple as left the congrega-
tion. Membership has hovered in

at Emanu-El. "It kind of feels like
your beliefs are important. You
feel welcome."
Aside from its unique geo-
graphic status and style, Tem-
ple Emanu-El suffers from the
usual mid-life crisis: Its mem-
bership is aging, and while
Huntington Woods, Oak Park
and Royal Oak are attracting
young Jewish families, many
are unaffiliated. Drawing new
congregants who are committed
to keeping the temple vital is a
challenge.
But, Mr. Judelman says, there
are encouraging signs.
For one, the bulk of the mon-
ey raised thus far is from younger
members. And, at a recent par-

the range of 700 families for the
past 15 years, he says.
"While we do have a lot of
members who have adjusted
dues because of financial reasons
— we're never going to turn any-
one away — we continue to main-
tain a good, solid base of people
who pay full dues," Mr. Jacobs
says.
According to Judy Nolish,
membership and programming
vice president at Emanu-El, al-
most half the congregation comes
from the north and west suburbs
like Farmington Hills, Novi, West
Bloomfield and Bloomfield Town-
ship.
"It's a misconception that this
