the oldest cities in the world.
"A lot of my friends are going,
but they won't be on the same bus
as me so I won't really see them,"
she said. The buses are separat-
ed according to synagogue, tem-
ple or youth-group affiliation.
Deborah will be on an Adat
Shalom bus.
When it came time for pack-
ing, she started with the basic es-
sentials like hiking boots, suntan
lotion and sunglasses.
Then came the "List."
"I have to bring something like
three towels," she says. "I thought

that was pretty strange. And I
need a laundry bag. A laundry
bag?"
She will also bring along some
non-mandatory items such as a
journal, and a Detroit Red Wings
T-shirt and Michigan dried cher-
ries for the Israeli family she will
be staying with for a weekend.
Jordan hadn't given his host-
family gift too much thought but
figured he'd at least bring some
famous Sander's hot fudge. Un-
like his 200-plus travel compan-
ions, Jordan will spend an extra
week in Israel — visiting with his
grandparents and uncle, all of
whom live there.
"I'm looking forward to that
week as a culmination of every-
thing I'll learn on the mission,"
he said. El
