continued hate-filled remarks of
Nation of Islam leader Louis Far-
rakhan, but we seem to have al-
lowed our memories to fade. It
was not so long ago that Jews
and blacks made history by
marching together in the strug-
gle for civil rights in the march
on Washington. And Selma. And
Birmingham.
We should not feel compelled
to act because "we could be next."
We should feel so moved because
these despicable acts strike at one
of the most fundamental rights
we as Americans enjoy, that of
religious freedom.
A blazing match hurled at a
black church is a blazing match
aimed at all of us. This is no time
to make distinctions between
churches and synagogues, be-
tween "us" and "them." It is no
time to invoke recent black-Jew-
ish tensions as an excuse for our
inaction; it rings hollow and will
only haunt us later.
Martin Niemoeller, a German

Lutheran pastor who was im-
prisoned at Dachau for his anti-
Nazi activities, said:
"In Germany, they came first
for the Communists, and I didn't
speak up because I wasn't a Com-
munist. Then they came for the
Jews, and I didn't speak up be-
cause I wasn't a Jew. Then they
came for the trade unionists, and
I didn't speak up because I wasn't
a trade unionist. Then they came
for the Catholics, and I didn't
speak up because I was a Protes-
tant. Then they came for me, and
by that time no one was left to
speak up."
As Jews, deeply concerned
about preserving the right to wor-
ship in whatever way we choose
— but mainly without fear — we
cannot afford to sit back and do
nothing.

Genuine Unity

RABBI MOSHE SHERER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

T

he wringing of hands is so
intense it is almost audible.
The strong showing by re-
ligious parties in the recent
Israeli elections has elicited cries
of dismay and anguish by Reform,
Conservative and secular Jewish
spokesmen who rail against the
"Orthodox monopoly" in the Holy
Land.
Most galling to these propo-
nents of "Jewish religious plu-
ralism" is that the increased
Orthodox presence in the Knes-
set likely will assure that mat-
ters of personal status —
marriage, divorce, Jewish iden-
tity — will continue to be deter-
mined in Israel in accordance
with the standards of classical
Jewish religious law. The likely
reaffirmation of the state's offi-
cial embrace of Orthodoxy, they
despair, will foster further divi-
sions among a Jewish people des-
perately in need of unity.
The truth, however, is quite to
the contrary: Genuine Jewish
unity is promoted, not under-
mined, by Israel's adherence to
Orthodox standards governing
personal status; and it is cause
for celebration, not consternation,
that Israel's electorate has
strengthened the hand of those
who favor retention of the reli-
gious status quo.
Consider the most basic issue
of Jewish identity. All Jews ac-
cept, and have accepted for thou-
sands of years, that anyone born
to a Jewish mother or who con-

verts to Judaism in accordance
with Jewish law is a Jew.
In recent years, however, non-
Orthodox groups have decided to
expand the definition. Most no-
tably, the Reform movement has
unilaterally declared that anyone
born to a Jewish father is a Jew,
regardless of the mother's reli-
gious identity. Also, both the
Reform and Conservative move-
ments have loosened standards
for conversion.
As a result of these "innova-
tions," countless thousands of peo-
ple the world over are in a
religious Twilight Zone: counted
as Jews in certain segments of the
Jewish community, but as gen-
tiles in others.
The bottom line, therefore, is
that people who satisfy the Or-
thodox criteria for "Jewishness"
are universally acknowledged as
Jews. Beyond that historical stan-
dard of classical Jewish law lies
controversy and disunity.
The same is true with respect
to the issues of marriage and di-
vorce. Jewish law imposes re-
strictions on whom a Jew may
many, and how a divorce is to be
effectuated. But the Reform move-
ment has done away with many
of those restrictions. The upshot:
a clear dichotomy between mar-
riages and divorces performed
pursuant to Orthodox standards,
which are acceptable to all Jews;
and those performed pursuant to
Reform standards, which are ac-
ceptable only to some.
Faced with such pronounced
differences within the Jewish com-
munity on the most fundamental
