issues of personal status, what
path is available to the Jewish
state that is most likely to promote
unity? The path of "religious plu-
ralism," whereby Israel would em-
brace standards that deviate from
classical Jewish teaching and are
flatly rejected by many Jews the
world over? Or the historical path
of Jewish law, whereby the state
would adhere to the one set of
standards over whose acceptabil-
ity there is no controversy what-
soever?
The answer was self-evident
even at the very founding of the
Jewish state to no less a secular-
ist than David Ben-Gurion, Is-
rael's first prime minister. In
making his historic commitment
to the Agudath Israel World Or-
ganization that the new state
would look to classical Jewish law
in determining matters of per-
sonal status, Ben-Gurion wrote of
the urgent need "to avoid the split-
ting of the Jewish people." The
need is surely no less urgent to-
day.
We Orthodox Jews are pro-
foundly pained by the schisma-
tizing of the Jewish population.

RUSTICS

We are, moreover, deeply sad-
dened to hear ourselves blamed
for Jewish disunity when we have
done nothing but try to remain
faithful to the collective Jewish
heritage.
Pointing an angry finger at the
Orthodox as the instigators and
perpetuators of division, we feel,
is like blaming a faithful spouse
for the breakup of a marriage. The
fault lies with those who have
strayed.
But we have hope. What is bro-
ken can be put together once
again. Jews of all stripes are be-
ginning to recognize that the
greatest challenge facing Jews to-
day is how to assure Jewish con-
tinuity — the survival of Jews in
future generations as a distinctive
people with a distinctive heritage
and a distinctive religious mission.
With that recognition, perhaps,
will come reconciliation. For just
as classical Judaism furnishes the
one personal status standard
around which all Jews can coa-
lesce, so too does it furnish the one
foundation on which Jewish con-
tinuity can be assured. 0

I

like to think of myself as an
adventurous spirit. I also like
to think of myself as a six-foot-
tall blonde with an immacu-
late house. These are fantasies
of equal proportions.
Despite my self-concept as a
woman with adventure in her
soul, I have cement in my shoes.
I'd ski any mountain that wasn't
too slippery; swim any stream
that wasn't too cold, too fast or too
... oh, well, you get the picture.
This realization was provoked
Chicken Soup for the Soul, a pop-
ular compendium of upbeat tales
by Jack Canfield and Mark Vic-
tor Hansen.
They write about one John
Goddard who, at age 15, made
a list of 127 things he wanted to
do in his life and then set out to
do them. Along with some truly
wonderful artisidc and literary
ambitions — which he has
achieved — Goddard's goals in-
cluded exploring the Nile, study-
ing native culture in Borneo,
climbing Kilimanjaro and light-
ing a match with a .22 rifle. He's
done all these things and about
a hundred similar things as well.
Amazing.
My list of lifetime goals, though
it has a few serious entries — in-
cluding some artistic and literary
ones though absolutely none of
an athletic nature — is no match
for that of Mr. Goddard, who is

probably standing on the crest of
Mt. Everest playing Bach on his
violin as we speak.
My list includes avoiding roller
coasters, figuring out how to host
a kiddy birthday party for less
than a week's grocery budget,
having one school day this winter
when all three children are well
at the same time, and making it
to shul for three consecutive Sat-
urday mornings. So far I have suc-
ceeded in avoiding roller coasters.
My actual achievement list is
short: I've learned to keep kosher
even while camping out, to get
ready for Shabbat on time even
during the short days of winter,
and to throw a seder for 40 peo-
ple even if the butcher doesn't
come through with my meat or-
der. Those feats may not stack
up to riding a bronco or flying a
glider, but they do offer both dan-
ger and spiritual fulfillment.
Like Mr. Goddard, I would like
to write a book, visit the Gala-
pagos, and live to see the twen-
ty-first century. But, as I read his
list, the ambitions he and I have
achieved in common are limited
to teaching a college course, see-
ing the Everglades, marrying,
having children, and learning to
type 50 words a minute.
I'd mention that I type 70,
but I don't want to make him
feel bad. He's been through
enough. 0
