If you are over 55 and looking for
a vacation that is intellectually
stimulating, culturally enriching
and tons of fun, try an elderhos-
tel.
I went to my first one recent-
ly in California and I had a ball.
Who were my fellow students?
About 50 men and women (cou-
ples and singles) from all over the
country and almost all Jews. But
that was because of the three
subjects we studied and the pro-
gram put together by the staff at
the Brandeis-Bardin Institute in
Simi Valley, Calif.

What did we study? The three
subjects were Jewish women
writers, Jewish jazz musicians
and Yiddish stories and songs.
The $395 per person fee for
the week included three strict-
ly kosher buffet meals a day —
plus snacks — a bottle of wine
per table on Friday night and
freshly baked challah.
In addition to the classes, there
was entertainment every evening,
a klezmer concert, Israeli danc-
ing and a student talent show.
Not all elderhostels are this
Jewish, but I was told that about
one third of the 300,000 people
who attend the national and in-
ternational programs each year
are Jewish.

Most of the hostels are held on
a college or university campus in
all 50 states and in over 40 coun-
tries. The subjects are varied.
Jewish topics include Jews in
opera, Passover, evolution of
Jewish law, conversion. Non-
Jewish subjects include the arts
of China, the American system
of justice, wine history, how a
play is born, the art of autobi-
ography, origins of life and more.
