planters stretches the entire
length of the beach. And it is a
user-friendly promenade, with
benches shaded by pergolas, nu
merous moveable white chairs,
and ramps at frequent intervals
providing easy access to the sand.
This promenade is everyone's
/—
outdoor living room. Older peo-
ple pull the plastic chairs right to
the edge and sit near the water,
schmoozing, playing cards,
watching the beach activity. Oth-
ers relax under the shaded
benches.
And still others keep moving:
\
/=i)
joggers, rollerbladers and those
strolling at the leisurely pace.
Others come down after dark.
Even late in the evening,
beachlovers spread blankets and
enjoy a late supper; couples walk
hand in hand in the moonlight—
and some adventurous bathers
splash in the water.
By early evening, the focus
shifts to the promenade, with its
colorful parade of activity. Car-
nival, bazaar, outdoor theater —
the promenade is all this and
more during peak evening hours,
easily providing a full evening's
entertainment, as I discovered
when I spent four consecutive
- evenings simply strolling on the
promenade. I never tired of the
kaleidoscope of activity.
There was, for instance, the
vast assortment of wares set up
on display stands near the beach:
earrings, bracelets, scarves,
shawls, balloons, baskets; it was
a true Middle Eastern bazaar.
Then there were the street artists
who set up their easles and did
portraits on the spot. The cre-
ation of these portraits was a
mini-drama of its own. A crowd
would gather round to watch the
artist fill in each brush stroke as
the subject sat patiently. Then,
when the portrait was finished,
the artist would hand it to the
subject with a flourish, and the
"audience" would strain to see the
finished product.
Jugglers were another diver-
sion. Each evening, there were
several of them at various in-
tervals along the promenade,
deftly tossing sparkling balls in
the air, catching them, tossing
them again, while the crowd
watched.
But nobody lingered long at
any spot, not with so much to see
and do. A few steps further down
the promenade as I strolled one
evening, a group of musicians
were tuning up, with violins and
a flute. Soon the delicate sounds
of Mozart floated in the air.
The musicians, who were
Russian emigres, played several
ambitious works, their faces as
intent and focused as if they were
in a concert hall.
They were not, of course. But
they were making music in a
place where the sounds re-
sounded sweetly in the sea-scent-
ed air, and where the audience
was appreciative. El
