Jewish groups joined with a long
list of Christian organizations —
ranging from the National Coun-
cil of Churches to the Christian
Coalition— in calling for a strong
federal response to the wave of ar-
son incidents at African-Ameri-
can churches across the South.
And some Jewish groups are
going further by pushing legis-
lation that would make it easier
for the government to investigate
acts of terrorism against religious
institutions.
A delegation of 60 black pas-
tors met with Attorney General
Janet Reno and Treasury Secre-
tary Robert Rubin; both officials
promised an all-out federal effort
to find the arsonists and prevent
future attacks.
To demonstrate his concern,
President Clinton planned a
Wednesday trip to the site of a
burned-out church in South Car-
olina.

Jewish groups are mobilizing
to offer both moral and more tan-
gible support.
Officials of the Anti-Defama-
tion League in several Southern
states are meeting with African-
American ministers and offering
their expertise on security mea-
sures for religious organizations.
"Unfortunately, that's some-
thing we have a lot of experience
with," said ADL National Direc-
tor Abraham Foxman. "In addi-
tion, we are using whatever
influence we have to make sure
officials at every level take this se-
riously."
ADL, the American Jewish
Committee and other Jewish
groups are supporting a bill spon-
sored by Rep. Henry Hyde,
and Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich.,
legislators spanning the ideolog-
ical spectrum, that would beef up
an existing law making it easier
to prosecute those who attack
houses of worship.
"We supported this legislation
when it was passed in the mid-
1980s, and we support the effort
to make it an even more effective
tool now in the wake of these ter-
rible incidents," said Richard
Foltin, legislative director of the
American Jewish Committee.
