1 minder of the global village we all inhabit. Here were destina- tions all over the world — and on every continent — to which hun- dreds of passengers would soon be departing from this one hub. Soon, too, I would take off on a Lufthansa jet bound for Newark, N.J., where I'd get a limo home to Philadelphia. Time was indeed flying — and it was time to shift gears from airport tourist to pas- senger. It took just a few min- utes to return to the hotel, pick up my luggag, and wheel it back to the terminal to check in for my flight. Touring the airport had made this departure day more inter- esting and less routine. So I tried the strategy again when my trav- els took me to Switzerland. The Zurich airport also is a world of its own— sleek, sophis- ticated, spotlessly clean and effi- cient, the same qualities tourists often admire in Switzerland it- self. Then, too, the array of shops made the airport a virtual shop- ping mall. Perfumes, souvenirs, fruit stands, Swiss cheese and chocolates — all this and more was available even before pas- sengers entered the departure zone with its duty free shop. Israel's Ben-Gurion Airport was a very different adventure. On previous occasions at this air- port, I was focused on the rou- tines of checking in — and was often frustrated by the long waits because of security checks. This time, I focused on the ac- tivity in this hectic, bustling air- port — and on the atmosphere of drama and anticipation. For instance, there were the crowds of people waiting eagerly at the arrival gate, holding up hand-lettered signs, expectantly looking for relatives or passen- gers they might not even know. Then there were hugs, shouts, embraces, as passengers raced to the people waiting for them. The airport restaurant busy, bustling, noisy — was an- other colorful scene. Arab men sat sipping black coffee; young people with backpacks grabbed falafel sandwiches. Meanwhile, out in the terminal, Israelis, Americans, Europeans, travelers from the Middle East and else- where — all were part of the mix. Human interest dramas are an integral part of Ben-Gurion airport. It is here that people from far-flung places first set foot as they begin new lives in Israel. This also is where so many U.S. travelers have their first contact with the Jewish homeland. Even though it's not ultra- modern like the airports in west- ern Europe (although significant improvements have recently been made), and even though the waits can be long and frustrat- ing, Ben-Gurion is still an airport with special resonance for many travelers. ❑ MOTOR COACH TOURS - AIR AND CRUISE TRAVEL Travel .._ 'nix., Bargains * WE HAVE CONSUMER BANKRUPTCY INSURANCE * HMHF Colorado Las Vegas $ 69" $ Round Trip From Nonstops Mon, Fri, & Sat 3, 4, 7, 10, 11 or 14 rfts.
