GRAND OPENING N. METRO Metro Boat Sales is proud to announce our new location - near you! ( BOAT issues," says Zamira Segev, ac- taive in the coalition. "What still concerns us enor- mously, however, is that the Con- servative and Reform movements will be the first to be harmed," Ms. Segev adds. High on the list of the remaining demands is the amend- ment of the religious-conversion law and measures to keep mem- bers of the "alternative streams" off Israel's religious councils (de- spite a High Court ruling to the contrary). What's more, the commitment of the Third Way and Yisrael B'aliyah to religious pluralism is less definitive than their stand on religious coercion. Last week, Yuli Edelstein, a new Knesset member for Yisrael B'aliyah, said, "I want to help the immigrants. rm not interested in helping Reform [and Conserva- tive] Jews." Still, as spokesmen of the "al- ternative" movements point out, the ultimate connection between the two is sLonger than the unini- tiated suspect. "In accepting the appeals of the Conservative and Reform move- ments, the High Court has not ruled against the religious 'status quo,' as it opponents claim," says Rabbi Ehud Bandel of the Con- servative movement. "It has ruled according to the legal status quo, which demands full equality and forbids discrimination on the ba- sis of religious identification." Hence, Rabbi Bandel reasons, "Any attempt to make the court rule according to other than strict- ly legal principles will ultimately affect every sector of our society, by undermining Israel's democ- racy." Ms. Galili-Blum also laments the impact that the "alternative streams" were to have had on Jewish education in Israel. Two summers ago, the Shenhar Com- mission report called for an en- hancement of Jewish education in the secular schools, recom- mending that the Reform and Conservative movements help to build a new curriculum and train educators, using the lessons to bridge the religious and secular worlds. "We sank a fortune into cur- riculum ,planning and teacher training, but now rm sure none of it will be implemented," she fore- casts. Instead, secular students will be taught Jewish subjects either by Orthodox teachers who don't understand their background and thinking or by secular ones who lack a deep understanding of the material. "Either way," says Ms. Galili-Blum, "the result is likely to perpetuate the divisions in Is- raeli society by raising yet anoth- er generation that feels alienated toward religion." And that, as the results of last month's elections indicate, is fi- nally becoming a true concern of religious and secular Israelis. ❑ agiee MAXUM...
