gan. Over 17,000 copies were dis- tributed. The response, recalls Ms. Jacobs, "was amazing." "We were getting people call- ing us with breast cancer and other solid tumors, and we found that we weren't set up to help them," Ms. Jacobs said. Ms. Jacobs left her job in 1990 to form the link, which has since operated out of her daughter's old bedroom. Since then, she has accumulated a database of the people who have been served as well as others who are there to help. The link continues to re- ceive telephone calls around the clock on its 800-telephone line which are then assigned to 30 volunteers located around the country. With over 20,000 such trans- plants taking place in 300 med- ical centers each year, the NBMT Link has seen an increase in the number of requests for assis- tance. In the first four years, 2,000 calls came in; in the past 12 months, another 1,000 people called for help. Breast cancer pa- tients comprise about 40 percent of the callers. In the near future, the orga- nization is hoping to attract enough donations to open an of- fice and hire staff members. In addition, the NBMT Link is planning to print reference book- lets, one of which has been writ- ten by Keren Stronach. Ms. Stronach said she was very appreciative of the practi- cal advice people offered her when she was preparing to un- dergo her transplant in October 1994. "Other people helped me, and now it is my turn to help others," she said. 5.88 to APY 6.14,„„ Earn 5.88% APY on our 9 month CD at Old Kent.
