Israeli Economy
Is Less Corrupt

Jerusalem (JPFS) — A poll that
ranked 54 countries based on
their perceived corruptness, indi-
cates New Zealand is the world's
least corrupt country, scoring 9.43
out of a possible 10 points, while
Nigeria received the lowest score
for any nation at 0.69.
The poll, based on a survey
of b-usinesspeople, was carried out
according to the Corruption Per-
ceptions Index of the Berlin-based
Transparency International or-
ganization and Gottingen Uni-
versity.
Israel was ranked the 14th
cleanest county with a 7.71 rat-
ing, just ahead of the United
States, which received a 7.66.
Jordan, ranked 30th, received
a 4.89, while Russia ranked 47th
with a 2.58.
A zero grade in the corruption
index suggests a country's busi-
ness transactions are entirely
dominated by kickbacks, extor-
tion and bribery.
The index was based on 10 in-
ternational surveys of business-
men and reflects their impressions
and perceptions, not necessarily
the reality, of the corruptness of
a country.
The study's researchers defined
corruption as the misuse of pub-
lic power for private benefits.
These misuses included brib-
ing public officials, taking kick-
backs in public procurement or
embezzling public funds.
