ND Every New '96 Volvo Lease or Purdue

member at Maple-Drake for at
least 15 years, isn't happy with
the conditions at the JCC. He
continues to renew his mem-
bership because he would rather
give his money to a Jewish or-
ganization and because he likes
the size of the JCC track.
"If anything, I think it's got-
ten worse," Mr. Greenwald said.
"The place is not well kept and
there are days when the odors
are overwhelming. It's shabby
looking."
Others echoed Mr. Green-
wald's sentiments but did not
want their names associated
with negative comments about
the JCC.
Leonard Posner, 68, typically

uses the Center's facilities be-
ginning mid-morning and leaves
before lunch. Earlier this week
he took his grandson to an
evening swimming class. It was
a quiet evening at the Center.
The coffee shop was empty —
the man working the counter ac-
knowledged it was a slower-
than-usual evening — and there
was no activity in the halls. A
lone player played basketball on
the gym floor.
Mr. Posner, a JCC health-club
member for at least 30 years, de-
scribes the facilities as wonder-
ful. "A lot of people complain, but
I think it's unfounded," he said.
"Anything could be better, but
I'm happy here." ❑

last-minute settlement on
a contract avoided a
strike by workers at
Menorah House nursing
home in Southfield.
a
Johnstone,
Laura
spokesperson for Service Em-
ployees International Union
(SEIU) Local 79, said about 50
nurses aides and dietary and
laundry workers ratified a three-
year contract last week between
the union and Medi-Lodge, own-
er of the Southfield nursing
home. Of over 100 union em-
ployees at both Menorah House
and another Medi-Lodge nurs-
ing home in Royal Oak, only one
worker dissented.
"We are satisfied with the
contract, and I think the vote
shows it," she said.
Contract negotiations over the
past year broke down last
month, Ms. Johnstone said, and
Medi-Lodge was given strike no-
tification.
The major issue of the nego-
tiations was the employee pen-
sion program. Medi-Lodge
favored a 401k plan while the

workers opted for the union's
standard package.
"Really, there was only one se-
rious sticking point, that being
the SEIU pension plan and our
preference for a 401k plan,
which we thought was in the
best interest of the workers,"
said Dennis Hayes, administra-
tor of Menorah House.
In addition, the union sought
and secured a 50-cents-an-hour
raise for each of the three years

pension plan.

the contract is in effect. The pre-
vious starting hourly wage was
$5.80 an hour; the average was
$6.31 an hour.
"We wanted the wages to be
brought up above the poverty
level," Ms. Johnstone said.
Mr. Hayes said the wage in-
crease would be retroactive to
October.
