The Jewish Federation of Met-
ropolitan Detroit has approved
seven grants totaling $66,500
from its Max M. Fisher Jewish
Community Foundation.
The funds will go toward a va-
riety of projects sponsored by
Jewish organizations and insti-
tutions, from a synagogue out-
reach program for the
unaffiliated to a university oral
history project and supportive
services for older adults with
mental illness.
The majority of the grants are
for second- and third-year fund-
ing. Recipients are as follows:
Congregation Beth Shalom,
$4,000 for outreach to persons
not usually involved with the or-
ganized Jewish community, in-
cluding new American and
single-parent families.
University of Michigan-Dear-
born's Holocaust Archive Pro-
gram, $10,000 to enter the
archive into an international bib-
liographic data base, which will
be available to 17,000 libraries
throughout the world.
Michigan Jewish Aids Coali-
tion (MJAC), $10,000 for its Jew-
ish AIDS prevention curriculum
for teenagers and their parents
and educational community fo-
rums.
Kadima/Jewish Family Ser-
vice, $23,000 for focus workers
who provide supportive services
to elderly persons with mental
illness, enabling them to "age in
place" in their current residences
by monitoring medications and
ensuring stability.
Jewish Community Archives
Education Project, $10,000 for
archival educational program-
ming to benefit Federation agen-
cies and local community
organizations.
Fresh Air Society Horizons
Program, $7,500 for counselors
to integrate children with special
needs into an overnight Jewish
camping experience.
Zamir Chorale, $2,000 to sup-
port this professionally conduct-
ed chorus, the only one of its kind
to highlight Jewish music.
Grant monies from the Max
M. Fisher Jewish Community
Foundation come from income of
the general fund of the United
Jewish Foundation. The UJF
provides an annual allocation of
$200,000 to the Federation to
make grants for worthy projects.
For information about grants,
call the Federation Planning De-
partment, 642-4260.
