vacancy on the seven-member
seat
court, consistently won
as an independa.t. The other sit-
tingiu.tices received partisan
-nomin ations.
"I thought about it (running as
an independent) initially, and I
was told it's almost impossible to
run unless you have independent
wealth," Judge Cooper said. "I
don't have independent wealth,
but I'll go through the channels
and do what I can."
Judge Cooper said she doesn't
regret first seeking the Democ-
ratic nomination and later de-
ciding to run as an independent.
"It's not a matter of regret," she
said. "It's a matter of learning,
mostly about myself. I have to
be true to myself and who I am."
The judge does not think
changing her mind will hurt her.
The only hindrance could be the
delay in beginning the signature-
collection process.
"For a nomination, you need
to go to the party and discuss
what you've done for that party,"
Judge Cooper said. "I can't dis-
cuss my stance on issues because
I'm nonpartisan."
Judge Kathleen Jansen, a
Michigan Court of Appeals judge
who is seeking the Democratic
nomination, said the process of
becoming a state Supreme Court
justice is unusual because other
judicial races are (entirely) non-
partisan.
"But, in reality, all judges

have political associations," she
said.
'The system has been in place
since Michigan's initial consti-
tution was written in the 1800s,"
Judge Jansen said. "I don't think
it has served us poorly."
Judge Jansen acknowledges
the difficultly the nomination
process can present because
judges cannot discuss their po-
sitions on any issues, including
hot-button topics like capital
punishment. However, Judge
Jansen maintains having a
record of opinions gives her an
advantage because the Democ-
ratic Party, and ultimately the
voters, can consider her quali-
fications based on the court opin-
ions she's written.
Her colleague, Marilyn Kelly,
would not discuss the partisan
aspects of the process except to
say, "This is what we have in
Michigan, and it isn't going to
change. I'm telling people what
my qualifications are, and they
can base their decision on that."
If Judge Cooper is able to get
her name on the ballot, fund-rais-
ing could be more difficult than
for those with party backing.
Judge Cooper believes her
grass-roots efforts and the tone ,
of her message will enhance her
campaign.
"If I can get out my message
that politics doesn't belong in
this race, I think I can win in No-
vember," she said. 111
