shared responsibility. Miriam and Aaron speak publicly against Moses because he has married a Cushite woman. They also ask if Moses feels that the Lord speaks only through him. Perhaps they are jealous that Moses didn't take them into his confidence and consult them be- fore marrying again. Perhaps they simply want more recogni- tion. They are punished because they have no right to criticize without first attempting to un- derstand. The Lord explains that he speaks directly to Moses but di- rectly to others through visions and dreams. The punishment is there for everyone to see; the message is clear. The job of the leader is not to be coveted. There are times when authority should not be publicly challenged. Moses should face his task and be comfortable seeking the help of elders and trusting the guidance of the Lord. And God's chosen leader needs to be ac- cepted and supported. The Lord will not allow his special relationship with Moses and Moses' special responsibili- ty for the people to be chal- lenged. ❑ OCC BOARD OF TRUSTEES needs new leadership You am invited to tho4 Jewish Communitg Cfintp. of MOropolitan fttroit's 68th finnual Mviting- Thursday, June 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Janice Charach Epstein Museum/Gallery Jeanne Towar John Wangler, Ed.
