Scott discovered.
Dr. Vecchiarelli Scott's goal
was to remain true to Arendt. She
didn't do any "interpreting" and
always indicated from which ver-
sion of the text the remarks came.
"There's a certain ethics asso-
ciated with working with texts,"
she said. "You need to let the au-
thor speak through her own
words."
The result is a discovery the
professor believes "fills in many
of the gaps in her work. Not that
everything can be reduced to her
dissertation, but Arendt produced
some heavy theoretical stuff that's
tough even for theorists. What
this does is help her make more
sense."
The dissertation, she said, de-
fines popular Arendt terms such

as "community" and "world" and
exhibits a kind of "moral language
absent in many of her writings."
Its focus is what a moral person
must do to come to terms with an
evil world, and his obligation not
to disengage but to help establish
communities dedicated to doing
what is right.
Exactly how a young German
Jewish woman came to base her
dissertation on the writings of a
Catholic theologian is the obvious
question. But their response to
how to act in the face of evil is
similar.
Dr. Vecchiarelli Scott points to
Saint Augustine's The City of
God, which considers two soci-
eties: a city of God (the good guys)
and the city of man (everyone
else). Like Arendt, Saint Augus-
tine argues that in a world filled
with both, moral people must con-
tinue to struggle for good.
It was not a view shared by
Arendt's former mentor Martin
Heidegger. Heidegger also con-
sidered questions of good and
evil and eventually opted for a
kind of mental distancing from
the world. Evil was inevitable,
he said, and impossible to
change.
Heidegger, incidentally, later
became supportive of the Nazis.
Dr. Vecchiarelli Scott has pre-
sented her findings before the
Washington, D.C.-based Ameri-
can Political Science Association
and at Harvard University. She
continues to find passionate in-
terest in Arendt's work.
"She was always offending peo-
ple," she said. "And she will al-
ways be a major figure if only
because she was so controversial,
maybe for reasons she wouldn't
like so much today." ❑
