Israel from southern regions of
Lebanon. Moreover, the Syrian
port of Latakia is the primary
transit point for shipments of
Iranian arms and ammunition
that are on their way to Hezbol-
lah bases in the Beka'a.
To the outside world, repre-
sentatives of the Lebanese gov-
ernment publicly declare that
Hezbollah is merely fighting to
eject Israel from the narrow "se-
curity zone" that Israel maintains
along its border in southern
Lebanon. But Sheik Muhammad
Fadlallah, Hezbollah's senior
leader, has no compunction about
openly stating that he will not
rest until the State of Israel is to-
tally eradicated from the map
and its Jewish population is an-
nihilated. If Israeli forces were to
withdraw from the security zone
they have established along their
border with Lebanon, Hezbollah
would merely carry its war
against Zionism forward into the
Israeli territory of Galilee.
So Israel is faced with a situa-
tion that is extremely unpalat-
able, yet completely unavoidable.
The terrorists of Hezbollah will
not go away of their own accord
so long as Israel continues to ex-
ist. Moreover, the fact that
Hezbollah enjoys widespread
support amongst the Shiite Mus-
lims of southern Lebanon makes
it extremely difficult to wage an
effective campaign against them.
As long as the general Shiite pop-
ulace of south Lebanon continues
to harbor Hezbollah bases, either
by choice or by coercion, it will be
extremely difficult for the IDF to
decisively crush the Islamic rad-
icals. In addition, Hezbollah's
ability to conduct attacks against
Israel is greatly enhanced by the
uninterrupted supply of Iranian
weapons that are delivered to the
movement's bases in Lebanon via
the good auspices of Syria.
Under current circumstances,
we can only hope that the Israeli
army will be able to inflict such
heavy casualties on Hezbollah
that these Muslim extremists will
be forced to temporarily retreat
from their positions in southern
Lebanon. That is precisely what
happened during the last out-
break of heavy fighting between
Israel and Hezbollah in 1983. Af-
ter a few months of inactivity,
however, Hezbollah sent its fight-
ers southward once again to re-
new the sacred jihad, or Islamic
holy war, against "the Zionist en-
tity." The widespread support en-
joyed by Hezbollah among the
Lebanese Shiite Muslim popula-
tion provides the Islamic terror-
ist organization with a limitless
pool of new recruits. As I gained
more combat experience in
Lebanon, I gradually came to re-
alize that Hezbollah had the
same character as the Hydra of
ancient Greek mythology. For
every one of the monster's heads
we managed to cut off, two
sprang forth to replace it.
