turity of Paul Katz. Known to
concert goers around the world
as cellist of the Cleveland Quar-
tet, he is credited with more
than 2,500 concerts on four con-
tinents in the greatest series and
festivals of the world.
Just the prospect of observing
the interplay of Berick and Katz
as they relate and adapt to each
other artistically in the block-
buster Trio in G Major for vio-
lin, cello and piano (Opus 1, No.
2) by Beethoven and Trio No 1
in D minor for violin, cello and
piano (Opus 49) by Mendelssohn
is a special lure. James Tocco
playing piano for the Beethoven
piece and the famed Ruth Lare-
do joining Katz and Berick in the
Mendelssohn work are added
pluses.
It is an experience that the
artists, especially the young, like
Berick, particularly value.
'Working with new partners,

when the chemistry is good, can
generate exciting performances,"
explains Berick. "It is also a
source of new ideas that are im-
portant to a musician's growth."
There is another side to the
festival's programs: teams who
have worked together exten-
sively who can display the re-
sults of their exhaustive
exploration of the music and
their search for well-oiled per-
fection. Artistic Director James
Tocco and Ruth Laredo, who
have worked together before as
duo pianists, will perform Sym-
phonic Dances by Rachmaninoff
and Samuel Barber's Souvenirs
for piano, for four hands.
In other programs, the Amer-
net Quartet, which recently won
the Banff Quartet Competition,
will offer quartets by Haydn, De-
bussy and Schubert and a quin-
tet by Boccherini with cellist
Paul Katz.
