Welcome to the best Greek food this

John has been executive chef
at Little Italy since it opened,
with Jeff coming every so often
to work side by side as they have
done for the past 17 years.
Al had been in the recording
business for Motown Records
when he started his first pizze-
ria on Grand River and Outer
Drive in 1973 ... He sold it in the
early '80s after opening Ris-
torante di Maria of West Bloom-
field in 1978.
He has a keen eye in the
estaurant game, always work-
ing on new projects ... Jeff and
John watch the operations and
Al pops in and out to eat and kib-
itz with customers ... when not
at his and wife Joyce's cabin in
northern Michigan.
The outdoor dining at Little
Italy is very similar to an Italian
trattoria ... It is in an area be-
tween their unique restaurant
and a former carriage house next
door that has been transformed
into a bar/cafe.
Every day brings a different
soup special, not including mine-
strone, which is always there ...
John and Jeff have over 200
wines, all Italian, at Little Italy,
many available by the glass and

Little Italy is in a
Victorian home.

half-bottle ... Having this much
-wine in so small a place is un-
usual ... And the list of Italian
wines is classic.
Through the years, some
restaurant owners have opened
little places to keep their over-
head down ... John and Jeff have
a different reason ... Theirs is to
give what they feel is enhanced
personal attention to customers
and the ability for custom dining.
There are few better examples
of this than the charming Little
Italy, another Northville dining
gem.
CONGRATS ... to Mark
Plotkin on his birthday ... to Jeff
Freedman on his birthday ... to
Julie and Ed Sparage, living in
California, on their 50th an-
niversary ... Joe Cornell was
emcee at their celebration in the
Sheraton Universal-Hollywood
in Universal City.
NEW EXECUTIVE chef at
Jake's on the Lake, Orchard
Lake Road and Pontiac Trail,
- Louis "Mickey" Shatrau, comes
from Whispering Pines Country
Club in Pinckney, Mich., and was
on the culinary staff at Opus One
and Ann Arbor's Gandy Dancer
... Jake's on the Lake, owned by
Jim Kokas, Ed Mandziara and
Mike and Marian hitch, now has
live entertainment and dancing
Wednesday through Saturday
nights.
"IF YOU WOULD like the

newlyweds to kiss, your table
must stand up and sing a song
with the word 'love' in it. Other
attempts may result in chipped
silverware."
Our table, with Sandy and Dr.
Harvey Roth, Lu and Mark
Plotkin, Lucille and Louis Spag-
nuolo, was geared to stand en
masse singing "I Love You, A
Bushel And A Peck" but the re-
hearsals went for naught.
Newlyweds Mark and Jen-
nifer (Raff) Shapiro never did
make it back to the head table at
the University Club in East
Lansing, where the wedding re-
ception was held.
They had been married earli-
er by Rabbi Arnold Sleutelberg
under a chuppah at Alumni
Memorial Chapel on the Michi-
gan State University campus.
Mark is the son of Dr. Mar-
shall and Dee Shapiro, and Jen-
nifer is the daughter of Gary and
Pamela Raff.
Stacey, Mark's sister in the
bridal party, flew in from Tuscon,
Ariz., where she has moved to
"see the world," selling medical
instruments and supplies .. Jes-
sica Raff was her sister Jennifer's
maid of honor.
We didn't mind Dr. Harvey
Roth taking our butter and fork,
but the roll, too? ... Not quite ...
He may be faster with the surgi-
cal instruments, but not quick
enough to get our roll ... George
Perles, former MSU football
coach, for whom Mark was long-
snapper center on the varsity
squad, danced up a storm after
a few open bar visits ... Father-
of-the-bride Gary Raff was one of
the assistant coaches let go with
George Perles, but he continues
at the university teaching histo-
rY.
Almost 200 attendees had a
fun time.
CHEFS AT Rochester Chop
House and Kruse and Muer, both
on Main Street in Rochester, look
forward to what has become the
premier salmon opening of the
year ... the Copper River.
This year, the two restaurants
have teamed up with John
Sarich, author of the cookbook
John Sarich's Food & Wine of the
Pacific Northwest.
"This is really a very special
time of year for our guests who
enjoy fresh salmon," says owner
Bill Kruse ... His salmon biggie,
called the "Great Taste of the
Pacific Northwest," is available
both lunch and dinner through
June 20, or until the limited sup-
ply of Copper River salmon runs
out.
Bill serves about 700 pounds
in a typical week.
JOKE DEPT. ... The cus-
tomer sat down in the deli-
catessen and said, "I'll have a
corned beef sandwich, and make
it lean" ... "Yes, sir," said the wait-
ress. "Which way?"
DON'T FORGET ... Father's
Day is June 16.
