We invite all children — students, campers, graduates and other Center
friends, to be part of this special "hands on" experience.
On Sunday, June 2, from noon to 4 p.m., at the Maple/Drake building,
:
the children of the community can make their permanent mark on the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit.
For a donation of $118.00, your child(ren) or grandchild(ren) can hand-
print his or her hand in vibrant color on a ceramic tile. The child's full name
I
and year of the imprint will also be included on each tile. The handprinted tile
will be fired and permanently mounted in a mosaic on the halls of the JCC's
Family Development Center.
Don't miss this wonderful opportunity to capture a moment in your child's
life. Each time they walk through the halls of our Center, they will know that
their handprints helped support Family Development programs and children
less fortunate than themselves.
To reserve space for your child's Handprinting, call (810) 661-2080.

New York (JTA) — While
Swedish diplomat Raoul. Wallen-
berg was saving the lives of Jews
in Hungary during World War II,
some of his relatives were collab-
orating with the Nazis, according
to the World Jewish Congress.
"While Raoul was a saint, he
was performing superhero feats
to save the Jews in Budapest, the
U.S. government knew that the
Wallenberg bank, controlled by
his uncles, was cooperating whol-
ly with the - Nazis," said Elan
Steinberg, WJC executive direc-
tor.
The WJC reported that it dis-
covered the activities of the Wal-
lenberg-owned bank while
searching recently declassified
U.S. intelligence files for infor-
mation concerning the where-
abouts of assets of Holocaust
victims that are believed to be in
Swiss bank accounts.
The Wallenberg documents
shed light on "Sweden's involve-
ment with and collaboration with
the Nazis during the war," Mr.
Steinberg said. "Sweden is clear-
ly emerging as one of the places
where the Nazis moved assets."
According to the documents,
the Enskilda Bank, owned by Ja-
cob and Marcus Wallenberg,
Raoul's uncles, dealt in large black
market operations, money laun-
dering and concealing German in-
vestments in the United States.

The documents also contain ev-
idence disproving the belief in
some circles that Marcus Wal-
lenberg was on the side of the Al-
lies. He traveled to the United
States in 1940 on behalf of Ger-
man interests to buy back a block
of German securities being held
by America, according to the doc-
uments.
The disclosed information
about the collaboration between
the Nazi regime and Marcus and
Jacob Wallenberg suggests a rea-
son for the feeble attempt to find
their nephew.
"It's long been out there that
the Wallenberg family in Stock-
holm apparently did very little to
locate Raoul after his disappear-
ance into the Soviet gulag in Jan-
uary 1945," Mr. Steinberg said.
Stationed in Budapest, Raoul
Wallenberg helped to save some
20,000 Jews from deportation to
Nazi death camps. He was ar-
rested by Soviet occupation forces
in January 1945.
The Soviet authorities Main-
tained that Raoul Wallenberg
died in prison in 1947, but others
have claimed that he was alive as
late as the 1980s.
U.S. News & World Report re-
ported earlier this month that
newly unearthed documents
showed that Raoul Wallenberg
spied for an agency that was a
predecessor of the CIA.

Kosher Labeling
Is Protected

Washington (JTA) — Congres-
sional sponsors of Food and Drug
Administration reform legisla-
tion have agreed to include lan-
guage protecting kosher-labeling
laws.
Orthodox groups had charged
that provisions in the legislation,
which seeks to replace existing
state food safety and labeling
laws with uniform federal laws,
would have made it more difficult
for consumers to verify the au-
thenticity of kosher products.
Koshep-labeling laws — which
deal with consumer protection
rather than rabbinic designation
of what is kosher — are current-
ly in effect in at least 19 states.
The groups were concerned
that those laws would be ad-
versely impacted by the reform
legislation.
At meetings with Mandell
Ganchrow, president of the Or-

thodox Union, and Jeff Wice,
counsel for New York State As-
sembly Speaker Sheldon Silver,
Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., and
Rep. Scott Klug, R-Wis., agreed
to accept the language that would
safeguard kosher interests.
According to Mr. Ganchrow,
the language says: "Nothing con-
tained in this act shall be deemed
to apply to, or to pre-empt, any
state or local government from
enacting any law, rule, or regu-
lation with respect to religious di-
etary preparations."
Mr. Ganchrow said Mr. Klug
indicated he might even broaden
that language in the House ver-
sion of the reform legislation.
After talking.to the lawmak-
ers, Mr. Ganchrow said, "I'm 99.9
percent sure that there will be
nothing in this legislation that
will inadvertently affect the
kosher consumer."
