the other hand, required much
animal experimentation before
it became the very successful op-
eration it is today.
Most of you have taken an-
tibiotics for infection at one time
or another. Some of you take
medicines to control blood pres-
sure or diabetes, and others may
use modern heart medications
such as beta blockers or calcium
channel blockers. Many animals
and humans tested these drugs
before the first pill was released
for public consumption. If you
have been helped by modern
coronary angioplasty, years of
testing were needed to evaluate
the devices, while the manufac-
turing and packaging had to
survive intense scrutiny.
For the past 43 years I have
been witness to these marvelous
advances. I am happy none of
you was with me in the 1950s
and 1960s when I had to watch
patients die because we didn't
have the miracles that medical
research has developed for our
use today. We owe thanks to the
human and animal subjects and
to the researchers who have
helped us live longer and hap-
pier lives.
Some of you will read this ar-
ticle and think that I have no
feeling for the animals used in
experiments. Well, I do, and I
can understand why some peo-
ple have strong objection to an-
imal experimentation.
My life's work as a cardiolo-
gist has been trying to save and
prolong human life. I have been
in many animal laboratories as
a visitor and have known many
researchers. I believe most an-
imals are treated humanely and
feel that when inhumane treat-
ment is discovered, those re-
sponsible should be punished.
Try to look at it another way.
Imagine you are a soldier com-
manding a battle. Call it the war
against disease. The enemy has
just taken 10,000 of your troops
hostage and is threatening to
execute them.
They send a representative to
discuss terms for the hostages'
safe release. The representative
arrives carrying 100 white mice
and says, "If you will sacrifice
these 100 white mice, my sol-
diers will release the 10,000
hostages unharmed."
What will you do?
