Ken Poirier, the policy advis-
er for the Senate Republican
staff, said he reviewed the
Supreme Court decision and does
not think it will impact the bills.
"It (the Colorado cA se) dealt with
a constitutional amendment that
would have repealed several
laws giving specific rights," he
said. "Our bills don't repeal any-
thing for homosexuals."
The Supreme Court, Mr. Poiri-
er said, also ruled that a state
has no authority to enact specific
rights for homosexuals.
Some Jewish gays and les-
bians maintain that, no matter
what laws are passed, segments
of the Jewish community will al-
ways have a negative attitude to-
ward homosexuality.

Orthodox rabbis have consis-
tently condemned homosexuali-
ty, pointing to the references in
the Bible which refer to same-sex
unions as an abomination.
The Conservative movement
remains silent on the issue of civ-
il marriages but has spoken out
against rabbis officiating same-
sex ceremonies. Some rabbis
from the Reform and Humanis-
tic movements perform same-sex
union ceremonies. Others will
not.
Last month, the Central Con-
ference of American Rabbis,
which represents 1,750 Reform
rabbis, voted in support of civil
marriages for gays and lesbians.
"It's important to feel accept-
ed by all Jews," said Mr. Kort,
who has talked about his homo-
sexuality at a Jewish Family Ser-
vice program.
"I wouldn't have done that if I
didn't feel I had a higher level of
authority on my side," he said
about his JFS talk. "If anything,
the court's decision may indi-
rectly touch Jews, and people like
me will feel more empowered to
come out."
Mr. Goldman added, "Maybe
this Supreme Court decision will
make some people think about
their own bigotries and preju-
dices. Still, it's a major vote in
our favor."
