Gays and lesbians try to make sense out of a court
ruling and a Clinton promise.

ast week was bittersweet,
to say the least, for area
gays and lesbians who be-
gan the week by celebrat-
ing a U.S. Supreme Court
affirmation of homosexual rights.
The triumph turned to disap-
pointment over what some con-
sider political maneuvering by
President Clinton at their ex-
pense.
On May 20, the high court
struck down a provision of the
Colorado Constitution that abol-
ished existing civil rights pro-
tection for homosexuals and
barred the passage of new anti-
discrimination laws.
Later in the week, the White
House said President Clinton
would sign a bill to deny feder-
al recognition to same-sex mar-
riages if Congress passed the
legislation.

reading different headlines; this
time, the news came from the
White House.
The bill President Clinton said
he would sign if it gets to him in
its current language defines mar-
riage as the union of one man
and one woman, and it would
deny federal pensions, health
and other benefits to same-sex
couples. In addition, the legis-
lation stipulates no state is forced
to recognize another state's en-
dorsement of such a union.
The measure has not passed
the House or Senate. Such mar-
riages are not legal in any state,
although Hawaii is close to rec-
ognizing gay. marriages.
The Michigan Legislature is
considering a bill that would ban
same-sex marriages here and
recognition of such marriages
