Talks To Council
"Are We One? Jewish Unity in
the 21st Century" will be the top-
ic of the Jewish Community
Council Annual Meeting at 7:30
p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, at
the Jimmy Prentis Morris Jew-
ish Community Center in Oak
Park.
The program's speaker will be
Richard Joel, the international
director of Hillel: The Founda- ci /\
tion for Jewish Campus Life. Mr.
Joel will discuss his prescription
for Jewish unity, emphasizing
the need for "shalom bayit"
(peace in the household) and a
renaissance of Jewish literacy
and knowledge. An attorney by
profession, Mr. Joel came to Hil-
lel after seven years as the asso-
ciate dean and professor of law
at the Benjamin N. Cardozo
School of Law, Yeshiva Univer-
sity. He is a former Assistant
District Attorney and Deputy
chief of the Appeals Bureau in
the Bronx, New York.
The program will be dedicat-
ed to the memory of Morris D. c-\/
Baker, a former council board
member, who was a founding
member of Council's Jewish Uni-
ty (Achdut) Committee. Coun-
cil's election of officers and board
of directors and the presentation
of the Walter E. Klein Youth
awards also will take place dur-
ing the program.
The re-nominated slate of of-
ficers includes Allen Zemmol as
president of the Jewish Com-
munity Council of Metropolitan
Detroit and vice presidential can-
didates, Robert I. Brown, Elaine
C. Driker and Kathleen Straus,
along with Betsy Winkelman as
secretary and Howard I. Wallach
as treasurer. New nominees for
the board of directors are David
H. Colburn, Barbara L. Grant,
Susan Leemaster, George P.
Mann, Stacey Schwartz, Audrey
Sobel and Trudy Weiss.
The program is free and open
to the public. To make a reser-
vation, call the Jewish Commu-
nity Council office, (810)
642-5393, to register.
