r SEEN AT MARVIN'S Politics, Stars, Flowers And Much, Much More I /-- /—= /-3 would have to say when it comes to politics, I certainly am not as knowledgeable as I should or could be, especial- ly as a young adult in our com- munity. Recently, I attended the Oak- land County and Macomb Coun- ty Young Democrats political function at South of Brazil Cof- fee House in Ferndale to hear George Stephanopoulos, se- nior strategy adviser to Presi- dent Clinton, speak. The event was hosted by U.S. Rep. Sandy Levin and Ferndale Mayor Chuck Goedert. It was an eye-opening experi- ence to listen to these political leaders and realize how impor- tant it is that young adults in our community step up, get involved in the political process and be- come advocates of their party — whichever party that may be. We all have the right to vote and should exercise the pow- er that goes along with this right. Stephanopoulos spoke on everything from health-care reform to gay marriages, the homeless and welfare re- form, and other political hot buttons. "Young adults should be proud of their ideas and not let anyone criticize or turn them away from getting in- volved," said Stephanopou- los. Rep. Levin remarked: "We need a regeneration po- litically. It is time for a new generation of leadership to take over ... and assume leadership responsibilities in politics. Just do it!" Federation's Young Adult Division board member and B'nai B'rith Leadership Network (BBLN) liaison Caryn Wein- garden attended the event and said: "These types of events are very good for our community. We need to get these heavy political players here because it is great education for the Jewish com- munity." Sheri Benkoff, membership vice president of BBLN, com- mented that "the informal ex- change between the political leaders and the audience was ex- cellent. Mr. Stephanopoulos' an- swers were very direct; he did not side-step any questions." Dan Cherrin, who ran for state representative in 1994 and is currently attending Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University, summed up the day's event quite well: "It RUTHIE KOZLOWKI, Rheumatologist; PAUL KOREN Medical Publishing Representative; LAUREN BLITZ, Mother with daugh- ter Jilian and Son Max; GRANDMA ROSALIE DEAN with daugh- ter Michelle Wolfe, and Granddaughter Rebecca and Grandson Zachary; SUSAN GRANT, Spanish Teacher, North Farmington High School, with Daughter Traci; MARK & ANNE KLISMAN, Medical Lab Supervisor, with Daughter Rachel and Son Aaron. was very important for Sandy the tallest, fastest, steepest, Levin to bring George in to stand-up roller coaster and this year's signature ride speak to young people awaits you at Cedar and try to get us in- Point. OTHER HAPPENINGS AROUND TOWN Temple Israel has formed a young-adult group. I spoke with Rabbi Joshua Ben- nett recently about the pur- pose of the newly formed group. "Its goal is not to compete with Federation's YAD, but to have a synagogue-based youth organization that will filter into YAD. We want young adults to feel a part of their synagogue and connect with the greater Jewish community," Rabbi Ben- nett said. For more information, call Temple Israel at (810) 661- 5700. WISHING A SPEEDY RECOVERY Finally, I'd like to take this time to wish a very speedy recovery to my father, Dr. Stephan Morse, who recently had back surgery. I know how much you love your golf game, Dad, so I hope you will be able to get back on the golf course real soon. ❑ MARVIN SEZ: "KIDS WILL LOVE YOU EVEN MORE IF YOU HAVE THEIR BIRTHDAY PARTY AT MARVIN'S" PASSPORT PHOTOS, ID'S, ETC.
