Industrial Growth
Has Stabilized

Jerusalem (JPFS) — Industrial
growth has stabilized at a rela-
tively low level since the start of
the year, reflected in a slowdown
in export deliveries and a stand-
still in local market sales,
according to a Manufacturers As-
sociation survey.
Association general manager
Yoram Belizovsky said the sur-
vey of 190 companies was con-
ducted in the second half of March
and April.
In the second quarter, 40 per-
cent of the manufacturers fore-
casted a 21 percent drop in local
market sales. In the export field,
51 percent of the manufacturers
expect export shipments to grow,
compared with 17 percent that
anticipate a drop.
The manufacturers forecast a
small growth in investments in
fixed assets in the second quar-
ter. A drop in investments is ex-
pected in the food and textiles
fields, compared with a rise in the
metals and electronics field.

American Business
On The Increase

Jerusalem (JPFS) — The decision
by Estee Lauder, the American-
headquartered international cos-
metics firm, to resume operations
in Israel is part of a larger trend
of American companies coming to
Israel, U.S. Ambassador Martin
Indyk said.
Mr. Indyk was speaking at a
reception at his home on the oc-
casion of the relaunching of Es-
tee Lauder in Israel and the
release of its new fragrance, Plea-
sures.
Although the company's prod-
ucts have been on the Israeli mar-
:: ket for some 30 years, they have
not been highly visible for the past
17 years.
All that will change, promised
Ronald S. Lauder, chairman of
Estee Lauder International.
Lauder has varied business in-
terests beyond the cosmetics in-
dustry, and, according to Indyk,
is one of the leading foreign in-
vestors in telecommunications in
Israel, primarily through RSL
Communications.
