Vishay Builds
Israel Factory

Jerusalem (JPFS) - Vishay In-
tertechnology, a manufacturer of
wide-range electronic resistors
and resistive sensors, inaugu-
rated the first stage of a $175 mil-
lion factory in Migdal Ha'emek.
The factory, which will produce
multi-layer ceramic capacitors
used in all types of electronic
equipment, will be the Pennsyl-
vania-based company's fourth
plant in Israel.
It will employ 200 workers dur-
ing the first stages of operations.
Vishay (NYSE) said it expects the
factory to grow to 1,200 employ-
ees, bringing the number of local
employees to 2,900.
Vishay's first-quarter net in-
come rose 27 percent to $28 mil-
lion from $22 million in the
corresponding period last year.

Inaugural Flight
For MiG-21

Jerusalem (JPFS) - The inau-
gural flight of the Elbit MiG-21
two-seater recently took place
successfully.
The plane is, in fact, a Mig-21
Lancer that Elbit is upgrading
in Romania for the Romanian Air
Force.
The flight lasted about half an
hour at the factory in Bacau, Ro-
mania, of Aerostar SA, the Ro-
manian aircraft industry.
A joint flight crew from the two
companies carried out the flight.
According to Elbit, the upgrading
schedule is proceeding according
to schedule. In August 1995, the
inaugural flight of the first pro-
totype MiG-21 single-seater took
place.
Both planes fulfilled the tacti-

cal, technical and safety require-
ments of the Romanian Air Force,
which has approved the gradual
upgrading of all the MiG-21s in
its possession, Elbit said.

Kardan Goes
International

Jerusalem (JPFS) - Kardan
Agricultural Appliances, a sub-
sidiary of Kardan Investments,
is in advanced negotiations with
international companies to mar-
ket research and development
programs valued at about $4 mil-
lion.
The company is in talks to
market six research and tech-
nological development programs,
which were researched at the Vol-
canic Institute of Agricultural Re-
search.
The Agriculture Ministry re-
cently awarded Kardan a con-
tract to market technological
research projects conducted at the
Volcanic Institute.
The contract was awarded in
an attempt to expand the insti-
tute's research and development
activities by creating strategic
partnerships and attracting in-
vestors.
Kardan General Manager
Moshe Shapira said the compa-
ny has a detailed work plan to
find potential scientific projects
that can attract overseas financ-
ing.
He said the leading fields in
agriculture research include com-
puterization of the agriculture
sector, pesticides and genetic en-
gineering.
Mr. Shapira said there is very
large marketing potential for the
research projects conducted at the
institute, estimated at between
$15 million and $20 million in the
first year of marketing.
