Carole and Sam Sobel have been
friends of Kadima for many years. They
know how important it is for young
adults to feel safe and live in a caring
and dignified environment. They care
that there is a place they can call
"home", where they are able to live up to
their full potential. In their son's memory,
they are providing such a place: The
Daniel B. Sobel Home.
By donating a home for Kadima clients,

A week does not go by at Kadima
when we are not confronted with a
client or a family at our doorstep, their
life in utter disarray. Bringing order to
these lives often demands an all-con-
suming effort on the part of the staff.
Each client brings a unique set of cir-
cumstances requiring innovative prob-
lem solving. Kadima taps into existing
resources and constantly searches for
creative ways to bring quality services
to clients.
We have spent years developing a
comprehensive plan of service delivery
that is innovative, creative, and we

Carole and Sam Sobel are making a signif-
icant contribution to Kadima's vision for
the future. The Home will provide a per-
manent residence and support services for
three to five young adults. It will also pro-
vide an opportunity for clients with simi-
lar backgrounds and needs to live among
their peers and be fully integrated into the
community.
Kadima is honored that the Sobels have
chosen to be a part of Kadima's future.

Kadima Happenings

Get out your sports equipment and
get ready to play. Kadima clients, fami-
lies, board members, volunteers, and
staff are going to camp. We have been
offered the use of Silver Lodge Resort
near Cheboygan, MI for 5 days in June,
and we are already making prepara-
tions. The resort has been generously
donated by Steve Grand. It will be a
fun filled 5 days with boating, swim-
ming, biking, and lots more.
Kadima clients have had a busy win-
ter between holiday celebrations and
social activities. Over 50 clients enjoyed
the annual Thanksgiving dinner and
then the December holiday party.
Many clients took to the lanes for a
bowling party with a high score of 190
by one of our residents. We continue to
have Fun Sz Fitness evenings at the
Jewish Center. Spectator sports were
also a part of our schedule as clients
went to see some Whaler hockey games.

Recently, clients were entertained by
the Sisterhood of Adat Shalom
Synagogue and the Adat Shalom
Nursery School students at a wonderful
Purim luncheon complete with "Shlach
Manot" bags to take home. Rabbi
Nevins led a seder service at the
Kadima office prior to the start of
Passover to get us all prepared for the
holiday. We were also feted by the
Cooperative Council of the League of
Jewish Women at a Passover luncheon
at the Oak Park Jewish Community
Center.
With summer approaching we are
looking forward to picnics, miniature
golf outings, concerts at Shepherd Park,
and hopefully some tickets will be
donated for the Tigers games. We are
grateful to all of our supporters in the
community who are giving their time
and energy to integrate our clients into
their homes and their hearts.

Kadima Holds Its Annual Meeting and
The Fourth Conference On Adults with
Psychiatric Disabilities

Kadima will hold its annual meeting
on May 29, 1996 at Temple Beth El. At
that time the 1996 Board of Directors,
Officers, and an Advisory Board will be
installed.
The board meeting will be followed at
7:00 p.m. by the Fourth Conference on
Adults with Psychiatric Disabilities titled

"Schizophrenia: A Family Affair".

The first speaker, Frederick J. Frese
Ph.D., who was diagnosed with schizo-
phrenia nearly thirty years ago will share
his struggles in a life and death battle
with enemies that only he could see and
hear. It's a battle that one of every ten
families in OUR CITY and three million
people nationwide are still fighting.
Dr. Frese will be followed by Husseini
K. Manji, M.D., F.R.C.P.C., who is the
medical director of the Neuropsychiatric

know that it works!

Today we have clients living in the
community, working, and leading
meaningful lives; these same men and
women were once shuffling along the
halls of state hospitals. We keep clients
connected to their community. WE

MOVE SERVICES, NOT PEOPLE.

Our quest now is to find ways to
make our services accessible to all of
those who need them. We have devel-
oped cooperative partnerships with
other agencies. This helps. We have
gotten state and county funding for
programs. This helps. We have bene-
factors who believe in and support our
mission. This helps. It is still not
enough.
We need even greater support to con-
tinue to reach out to the mentally ill in
our midst. Our clients depend on the
resources that come to Kadima to
improve the quality of their lives.
Many others are waiting to attain these
services, but our resources are limited.
Their lives are on hold. Its up to each
and every one of us to give them hope
for the future and the will to "MOVE
FORWARD".

Research Unit at the Detroit Receiving
Hospital, University Health Center, and
Wayne State University. Dr. Manji will
speak about new methods of correcting
problems in the nerve communication
process, leading to effective management
of severe mood disorders and schizo-
phrenia.
Kadima, the sponsor of the confer-
ence, is a nonprofit, nonsectarian, mental
health agency with over a twelve year
history of providing innovative pro-
grams and services to men and women
with psychiatric disabilities. Kadima
offers residential options, outpatient ser-
vices, and supported employment as
part of a rehabilitation program to assist
the mentally ill in maximizing indepen-
dence, social functioning, and reintegra-
tion into the community.
