"No other (Jewish) celebration
or activity attracts those kinds of
numbers."
Yes, Mr. Lis said, fun is a big
and important part of the festi-
val, as it should be. It is, after all,
the 48th anniversary of Israeli in-
dependence. But in his view, par-
ticipants also gain a grasp of the
"shared destiny" between Amer-
ican and Israeli Jews.
David Gad-Harf, executive di-
rector of the Jewish Communi-
ty Council, said this bond has
even greater significance follow-
ing a series of tragic events in Is-
rael, from the assassination of
Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin to
recent terrorist attacks on civil-
ians.
Mr. Gad-Harf said Israel Fest,
and events like it, can help forge
closer ties to Israel in ways that
are not always readily apparent.
"It's hard to measure motiva-
tion or levels of enthusiasm," he
said. "But I think the impact of
events like this often are not felt
for quite a while.
"It may translate into more vol-
untary involvement in Jewish or-
ganizations. It may lead to a
willingness among some people
to contribute to causes that are
connected to Israel. It may trans-
late into expanded political ac-
tivism.
"A single event won't change
the world," he said. "But if it gives
people an annual basis to look for-
ward to something, that can have
a positive cumulative effect."
