those spent at home, sharing in-
terests and hobbies.
"Gardening is one of those ac-
tivities that is fun doing together,
particularly when children are
young. They enjoy their turn to wa-
ter the flowers," adds Mrs.
Sandweiss. "Cooking, especially
making special treats for the
Jewish holidays, is another fun
activity.
"Some afternoons we work on
an art project, making collages out
of paper, old calendars, buttons,
yarn and glitter — all sorts of things
I've collected for such occasions.
It's fascinating to observe what ma-
terials attract the children and how
they put them together."
And as for many grandparents,
reading to her grandchildren is a fa-
vorite of Mrs. Sandweiss'. "I read
to them and they read to me. We
started this ritual when they were
very young, and it's just as enjoy-
able for the children as it is for me.
I love hearing them interpret sto-
ries."
When, a few years ago, they
_wanted a place away from the dai-
ly tumult that would be big enough
for themselves, their children and
their grandchildren, Dr. Mel and
Geraldine Lester of Franklin bought
a home near Charlevoix on Lake
Michigan.
"We had a place Up North
when our children were grow-

ing up, and it was a wonderful
experience," explains Mrs. Lester.
"We loved the natural setting and
thought it would be a perfect
place for our extended three-gen-
eration family to spend time to-
gether."
Mrs. Lester doesn't plan activi-
ties for the grandchildren when
they're Up North because they
have so many programmed activi-
ties at home.
"It's most important to me just
to spend time with them without
doing anything in particular," says
Mrs. Lester. "We may take a walk
along the beach, cleaning up the
bottles and plastic garbage along
the way, because that's what their
grandfather and I do. We always
take a bag with us either to collect
things we want to keep or need to
throw away.
"Or we might pick berries and
walk in the woods. Sometimes, I'll
play the guitar and we'll sing to-
gether; that's special time, not be-
ing in a hurry, not having to be
somewhere."
Gardening is also a favorite ac-
tivity of the Lesters' and the grand-
children play major roles.
"They go to the Eastern Mar-
ket with us, select flowers and
help decide where we should
plant them," continues Mrs.
Lester. "They really like it when
they can get muddy and no one
