your primary interest is in envi-
ronmental friendliness, David Kay
offers a generously sized recycled
rocker. Manufactured from 500
milk containers for the look of
wood without the trees, the weath-
er-resistant chair won't warp, crack
or split And, they claim, it will nev-
er need painting or staining.
Many of us have come to enjoy
increasingly durable plastic furni-
ture. What's great about them is
that they don't absorb the heat like
aluminum or iron, they're easy to
keep clean and they don't fade.
• Bemis Casual Furniture, which
manufactures very sturdy outdoor
resin products in a variety of styles,
offers everything from dining sets
to chaise longues, beverage trolleys
to love seats, and even a multipo-
sition folding rocking chair. They
also have a 48-inch glass-top
pedestal dining table and an oval
dining table that mends from 60
inches to 75 inches with a leaf.
Regardless of the type of furni-
ture you select, if you plan to en-
tertain a lot outdoors or spend
hours at a time yourself on the
chair or chaise longue, you prob-
ably ought to pick up cushions for
each piece. The best outdoor fab-
rics are heavyweight acrylics that
/2 will hold their own with sun or salt
Look for fabric called Sunbrella or
Giati. Both are treated for water re-
pellency and mildew and won't
fade. Fillings should be urethane
foam. It's practical, comes in a
range of densities, sheds water and
is inexpensive. You can also go with
Dacron batting material.
Once you've ordered or built
your furniture, it's important to
place and enhance it with you and
your guests' comfort in mind.
Place some loungers and chairs
in the shade.
Provide cushions for seats.
When hosting a large party, plan
the layout to encourage traffic flow
easily from inside the house to out-
side areas. ❑
