Whitewater occurs during the 22
days of the Fall Dam Release when
the Summerville Dam in southern
West Virginia is released, and lit-
erally tons of water crash down
the Gauley Rivers. There are five
Class V+ rapids, enough to chal-
lenge the best of rafters. Trips on
the Lower Gauley are also more
advanced during this period in the
