WHITE WATER page 36
Other excursions include white-
water rafting in northeastern Aus-
tralia, Indonesia, New Zealand,
Peru and the Patagonia areas of
Chile and Argentina. Trips are rat-
ed according to degree of difficulty.
A 22-day trek in Indonesia and
a 17-day adventure down the
Amazon cost almost $4,000.
Costs include lodging and food,
equipment, and special interest
programs, but not airfare. A por-
tion of the fee is contributed to a
local conservation and research
project.

sites, side hikes to abandoned
homesteads and exploring the hot
springs are all part of the adven-
ture.
In addition, there are three-,
five-, six-, eight- and 12-day raft-
ing trips in the Grand Canyon.
Rafting down the big waters are
trips through Hell's Canyon on the
Snake River in Idaho and Oregon
and a two-day adventure down a
22-mile stretch of the Piedra Riv-

Class IV and V rapids. Some of
these trips are recommended for
experienced boaters only. In ad-
dition, American Wilderness has
a four-day trip down the Rogue
