ing, they provide the tents, sleep-
ing bags, cooking supplies and eat-
ing utensils. The rafters' job is to
pitch in and help set up the camp-
site.
"What's most important is
dressing properly for these trips,"
advises Mark Lewis, director of
river safety for River White Water
Rafting, an outfitter in Virginia.
"That means nothing in cotton be-
cause cotton retains moisture.
Wear synthetic fabrics or wool de-
pending upon the time of year and
temperature.
"Synthetics and wool dry quick-
ly and wick any moisture away
from the body so the rafter doesn't
get cold. And always bring a wind-
breaker. Even in the summer
when the sun goes down, it can
get chilly on the rivers."
Here is a list of some of the or-
ganizations, outfitting companies
and resorts that offer white-water
rafting trips.
Wilderness Inquiry, 1313
Fifth St SE, Box 84, Minneapolis,
MN 55414-1546; 612-379-3858.
As a nonprofit organization, WI
provides outdoor experiences for
diverse groups of people, includ-
ing those with physical disabilities.
For each adventure experience
in North America, groups include
men and women of all ages and
from a variety of places and back-
grounds.
The big white-water rafting ad-
venture for this organization is a
16-day Grand Canyon trip down
the mile-deep chasm that includes
white-water rafting at Roaring
Twenties rapids and the Anasazi
ruins at Nankoweap.
Participants learn about the ge-
ological history and diverse eco-
logical communities of this part of
the country. The trip is conduct-
ed with Canyon Explorations of
Flagstaff, Ariz. No rafting experi-
ence is necessary Estimated cost:
$2,600.

tered are many Class IV rapids at
high water including the legendary
Big Drops and Funnel Falls. For

er River in seven days. Costs:
