Dr. Friedman, a West Bloom-
field resident, has a family prac-
tice and is director of quality
improvement for Oakland Gen-
eral Hospital in Madison
Heights. He is a clinical assistant
professor at Michigan State Uni-
versity and clinical instructor in
the family medicine depai talent
at Wayne State University. A
graduate of the University of
Michigan, he received his degree
from the College of Osteopathic
Medicine and Surgery in Des
Moines, Iowa.

Wayne State Professor of Anato-
my Dr. Morris Goodman has
been elected a fellow of the Amer-
ican Academy of Arts and Sci-
ences. Dr. Goodman is one of
eight inductees elected to the sec-
tion "Evolutionary and Popula-
tion Biology and Ecology."
Dr. Goodman is noted for his
research in the field of molecular
evolution that showed chim-
panzees are more closely related
to humans than to other apes.
A faculty member of the
School of Medicine since 1958,

named recipient of the second
Leonard N. Simons Volunteer
Award, which was presented
May 11 at the Michigan Cancer
Foundation's 14th annual din-
ner to benefit the Barbara Aim
Karmanos Cancer Institute.
The purpose of the award is to
recognize volunteers who have
provided exceptional leadership,
service and personal commit-
ment to the institute's mission of
controlling cancer.
A former chairman of the
trustees and a current member
of the board of directors, Mr. Her-
melin currently chairs the de-
velopment oversight division of
the institute.

Three local body builders placed
first in the Mr. and Ms. Masters
AAU competitions. All three are
trained by U.S.A. Bodybuilding
Champion and Mr. America run-
ner-up Adam Schlecter of West
Bloomfield. Mr. Schlecter is the
fitness director at CMI Health
and Tennis Club in Southfield.
Dennis Brewer of Royal
Oak, Ron Goldberg of South-
field and Sandy Kirsch of Hunt-
ington Woods won top honors in
their divisions.
