The French take pride in their
rich culinary tradition — which
encourages the hearty consump-
tion of wine as a, well, dietary sup-
plement to fat-laden entrees.
By contemporary standards,
the combination hardly seems de-
signed to promote vitality and
longevity.
But in a study of 36,000
Frenchmen ages 40 to 60, mor-
tality from all causes was reduced
by 30 percent with the consump-
tion of one to five glasses of wine
a day, reported Serge Renaud, a
French professor.
Consider it another piece in the
"French paradox" puzzle: Al-
though the average daily diet in
France is 45 percent fat (com-
pared with 34 percent in the Unit-
ed States), heart disease and
obesity are less prevalent there.
The key, it has been argued, is
the power of wine — particularly
red wine — to prevent fats from
building up on the walls of blood
vessels and arteries.
Professor Renaud, discussing
›- his research findings at an inter-
national nutrition conference in
London, contended that up to five
glasses of wine daily can negate
the artery-clogging effects of rich
cuisine.
He did note, however, that the
risk of cancer went up 30 percent
to 70 percent when more than five
glasses of wine were consumed
daily.
Previous studies have indicat-
ed that while the French outlive
Americans by more than two
years on average, and suffer 40
percent fewer heart attacks, they
are twice as likely as Americans
to die of liver disease or of cirrho-
sis of the liver.
Meanwhile, the American
Heart Association stands by this
recommendation: Alcohol con-
sumption should not exceed 3
ounces of 80-proof liquor, 24
ounces of beer or 12 ounces of
wine per day.

For the best eye protection un-
der the sun, you're better off with
gray lenses in your glasses.
The American Optometric As-
sociation suggests avoiding medi-
um and dark-blue lenses in
sunglasses because those tints
can seriously interfere with some
people's ability to distinguish traf
fic-signal colors.
Green or brown tints don't
seem to have the same effect, says
the AGA. The glasses should
block 75 percent to 90 percent of
the sun's visible light, enhancing
the ability of your eyes to adjust
to lower light levels at night. O
