COLLEGE BOUND : dj y y G h BABY BOOMERS page 73 y h t; after dabbling in classes because she decided she needed some kind of diversion. `The shop was not making the money I had hoped for, the phys- ical demands of hairdressing were great, and I decided I wanted something else," she said. "Both of my kids were proud of me for sticking with it and graduating." In my first life, I was a teacher," said Joy Nachman of Bloomfield Hills. She retired to raise her two chil- dren. When they were grown, she \_D went back to school to become a psychologist. She returned to school five years ago at University of Detroit Mercy. She received her master's degree in psychology in1995, and works in private practice. "I was so scared about going back to school," said Ms. Nach- man, who first had to take pre- requisites. "I kept going little bit by little bit, and I did really well. Every- one I went to school with was 20 or 30 years younger than me. I studied with them, and they be- came my friends." Going back to school is not nec- essarily an easy choice. "Things had changed so drastically," Ms. Nachman said. "I couldn't use a computer. I didn't even know how to use the library." But the freedom to choose to at- tend school is a unanimous ral- / lying cry. "My parents made me go to school at 18, and my main focus was socializing," Ms. Selfon said. "Now I realize I have to learn be- cause rm going to be helping peo- ple. Focus is the biggest difference. I know what has to be done, and I do it, be it studying late at night, or getting up early to start a pa- per. I'm more realistic about the demands than when I was 18." Returning to school requires support and cooperation from fam- ily members. On the other side of the coin, the older student can be /-J a tremendous inspiration and role model to her children. "My children valued an educa- tion because they saw how im- portant education was for me," said Ms. Hopp, who does not re- gret the years she spent in class- es. 'There were moments when I `,= wanted to quit, but I have no re- grets about the process I went through. In some ways it was eas- ier, because when you've lived life, and have had a lot of experiences, you have a greater understanding for what people are going through The only thing I lost was free time. It taught me patience, endurance and that the rewards were worth it." ❑ 4" Lh Scott Schwartz May you meet the challenges that lie ahead with the same enthusiasm and commitment as those of the past and...
