SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

/

For 13 years, Diane Hopp, of West
Bloomfield, took one college course
at a time while working as a hair-
dresser.
"I started at Oakland Commu-
nity College as a fluke," said Ms.
Hopp, who was a single mother of
two children. "I had a friend from
the salon who said, 'Let's take
some classes.' I did; she didn't."
Ultimately, Ms. Hopp received
her bachelor's degree in social work
from Wayne State University.

SUCCESS

Diane Hopp: From hairdresser to social
worker.

"I used to dream of graduating
college along with my son (her el-
dest child). But I did graduate
within months of my daughter's
college graduation," said Ms.
Hopp, who went on to pursue her
master's degree in social work,
also at Wayne, and is now prac-
ticing her chosen profession.
Ms. Hopp isn't the only college
student who is old enough to be a
parent to her classmates. Many
baby boomers and those beyond,
mostly women, are reentering the
classroom for a career change.
"I went back because I did not
like what I was doing," said Mis-
sy Selfon of Southfield, who
worked as a bookkeeper and con-
troller for an architectural firm for
years before deciding to return to
school for her bachelor's degree.
"I wanted a change and a chal-
lenge. I liked what I saw in the
counseling profession. I took a ca-
reer development course at OCC,
and realized I want to help other
people going through this kind of
transition."
Ms. Selfon received her degree
from Oakland University last Au-
gust. She attended Ferris after
high school but dropped out after
three years.
She is now halfway through her
master's program in counseling,
also at Oakland University.
