Importers Absorb
Higher Costs?

Jerusalem (JPFS) — Prices of
imports should not rise as a
result of the shekel's recent
depreciation, Israel Finance
Minister Avraham Shohat said.
Mr. Shohat hoped importers
would unilaterally absorb the
ensuing higher cost of foreign-
made goods. The shekel's
plunge against main foreign
currencies continued May 10
when it traded as low as 3.284
to the dollar.
Many Israeli exporters, es-
pecially in low-tech industries,
have been complaining over the
past three years that the shekel
is over-valued and was, there-
fore, hurting sales abroad. Most
economists, however, blamed
Israel's yawning trade deficit —
which exceeded $121 billion in
1995 — to the government's ex-
pansive fiscal policies rather
than to the exchange rate.
Speaking on Israel Radio,
Mr. Shohat said he was not
afraid of new pay demands by
the public sector, since he was
sure the shekel's devaluation
would not have a "dramatic" im-
pact on consumer prices. The
-Bank of Israel, apparently con-
tent with the market's adjust-
ment of its previously
over-valued currency, has stuck
by its policy of the past few
months by refraining from
trade intervention.

Survey Says
Inflation Up

/—

/- -""

Jerusalem (JPFS) — Bank Dis-
count's economists are forecast-
ing 12 to 12.5-percent inflation
this year in Israel, up from last
year's 8.1 percent.
At the start of the year, com-
mercial banks predicted an in-
flation rate of 8-10 percent and
Discount had predicted an an-
nu 21 rate of 11 percent in March.
A bank spokesman said the
forecast takes into account the
dollar's recent surge against the
shekel.
The consumer price index in-
creased by 14 percent during
this year's first quarter. The
economists said part of the rise
was due to an increase in hous-
ing prices, which had remained
relatively stable until the end of
last year.
According to the economists,
single-digit inflation will not be
achieved in 1996 as long as the
growth in consumer credit stays
at 20 percent per year. In April,
it increased by 1.5-2 percent.
The bank said the public's in-
flationary expectations for next
year have continuously risen in
recent months, reaching 12 per-
cent in April.
