The Relentless Pursuit of Perfection
Bad weather and bad wires pulled the plug.
S
piing rains and old cables
have combined to knock
"National Jewish Televi-
sion" off the air for a
month in Oak Park, Southfield
and West Bloomfield.
Irate viewers have created
their own deluge, calling Conti-
nental Cablevision to complain
about their missing Sunday
show.
Continental programming
manager Mike Fitzsimmons
said the complaints will hope-
fully end this Sunday, May 19.
"We've had to retrench and
rewire all of our satellite dish-
es," he said, calling the problem
a blessing in disguise because
the half-dozen satellite receivers
behind Continental's Southfield
office were repaired and the area
beautified.
Mr. Fitzsimmons said the sta-
tion was getting calls from view-
ers every day about the missing
program. The satellite dishes
are set in fixed positions, and the
station did not have a spare dish
to aim at the satellite used by
"National Jewish Television."
The three-hour show is broad-
cast by Continental beginning
at 1 p.m. each Sunday on Chan-
nel 11, its community access
channel.
Joel Levitch, president and
CEO of the National Jewish
Television Network in New
York, said the show is 15 years c
old. Five hundred communities
in the United States receive it
via cable TV, and individuals
pick it up throughout the West-
em Hemisphere via satellite.
"National Jewish Television"
includes "Jerusalem On Line,"
a news and public affairs pro-
gram from Israel broadcast from
1-1:30 p.m.; "Leon Charney
Report" from 1:30-2, including
news and interviews from New
York; "L'Chaim" with Rabbi
Mark Golub at 2 p.m., concen-
trating . on Jewish issues;
"Hineni" Bible study at 2:30
with Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis;
and the "Russian Hour" begin-
ning at 3 p.m., 60 minutes of
Russian language program-
ming.
Bill Black, Continental's di-
rector of corporate affairs, said
the station has no estimates of
how many viewers watch the
show.
In the absence of "National
Jewish Television," Continental
showed a directory of its pro-
gramming and a notice that it
was having technical difficulties
airing the show. ❑
