your most pressing concern
at present?

A: My deep concern is always Is-

rael. Whatever happens in the
world is of concern to all of us,
but Israel is special, because I
am Jewish and because of my
love for Israel. When I read a
newspaper, the first thing I look
for is a Jerusalem dateline. I am
concerned with the fanaticism
the're. Not only with the fanat-
ical act of killing [Yitzhak] Ra-
bin, but in general there is a lot
of fanaticism, voices of extrem-
ism. Fortunately they are small
and marginal. Then you have
the suicide bombers and Hamas
on the other side. It is very wor-
risome.

ten about you. What de-
scription of yourself do you
feel the most comfortable
with?

A: I don't take myself that seri-

ously. I still have to write; and
whenever I start to write, it is
just as difficult as it was before.
But I do it. At heart I am a
writer and a teacher. That is my
passion.

Q: What aspect of your pro-
fessional life do you find the
most satisfying?

A: Teaching is sometimes satis-

fying ... when there is a time
sometimes when a teacher re-
alizes that in the class there is
one person at one point and that
there is a flicker in that person's
eye, that is a reward. But it
doesn't last long.
