Ghafari and Alan E. Schwartz at its 10th an- nual dinner on Sunday, June 9, at 6:30 p.m. at the Troy Mar- riott. These two honorees will be the recipients of the annual Friends' Community Service Award. In addition, Woodrow W. Woody and Victor G. Ross will be recipients of the first special Friends Award in appreciation for their commitment to the Friends program for its inception. Proceeds from the dinner are used to finance scholarships for graduating high school seniors of Arabic and Jewish descent who write essays on a selected subject. This year's contest has a unique approach in that scholarships will be awarded for the best essays produced by a team. Yousif B. Ghafari, the Arabic recipient, is the founder, presi- dent and CEO of Ghafari Asso- ciates, Inc., full-service architectural, engineering, plan- ning and management firm. Mr. Ghafari, a naturalized American and U.S. citizen, is of Lebanese descent. Alan E. Schwartz, the ewish recipient, is a partner of the law firm of Honigman, H Miller, Schwartz & Cohn, of which he was a founding part- ner. Both Messrs. Ghafari and Schwartz's business and com- munity activities and other hon- ors are extensive and varied involving all dimensions of their business and community life. AJE Hosts AIDS Program \--D / The Agency for Jewish Educa- tion's Jewish Experiences For Families (JEFF), the Michigan Jewish Aids Coalition (MJAC), and the Jewish Community Cen- ter will present "Choose Life So That You May Live," an evening about HIV and AIDS for new American teen-agers and their parents. This free event will be held on Monday, May 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center in Oak Park. Throughout the evening, participants will have the opportunity to hear a special presentation by a Russian speak- ing doctor, join in a question and answer session with the doctor, and engage in interactive activ- ities from the "Choose Life So That You May Live" education- al guide.
