with starting the first Little
League baseball association in
Israel, where the family emi-
grated in the early 1980s. He
had aspirations for his oldest
daughter, who played half a sea-
son of boys baseball and made
the rounds among the usual
girls teams.
Rabbi Faudem joked that he
was "disappointed" she didn't
pursue a professional baseball
career, but her choice certainly
defied conventions, anyway.
"My parents never said, 'You
can't do it because you're a girl.'
I didn't live with gender bound-
aries. I wanted to go into the rab-
binate because I love Judaism,"
she said.
At 27, Rabbi Faudem is the
youngest rabbi in Hillel's histo-
ry. After graduating from the
school in 1983, she made aliyah
with her family.
After finishing high school in
Israel and two years in nation-
al service working at a day-care
center for the elderly, the rabbi
returned to the States to pursue
a degree in American history
and talmudic studies in a joint
Columbia University-Jewish
Theological Seminary program.

ter filled the hallway as
Rabbi Michelle Faudem
paused to talk to students.
A young girl pushed through
the crowd and slipped her arm
around the rabbi's waist.
"Your brother's cute," the 12-
year-old said, giggling. Rabbi
Faudem explained that some of
the students met 25-year-old Jef-
frey at a Yom Ha'atzma'ut pro-
gram the evening before. He was
in town for a family affair.
It's apparent that the school's
newest spiritual director, an ef-
fusive but focused presence, does
not intimidate her students.
They seem to regard her as a
peer. Rabbi Faudem regards
them as the future leaders of the
Jewish community.
If it were up to her, she'd
spend the next 10 years or more
at Hillel. She is truly thrilled to
be back.
"Hillel has played a major role
in my life, showing me Judaism
could be an everyday part of my
life. I knew I wanted to be a rab-
bi at 13 — or play baseball,"
Rabbi Faudem laughed.
