paigns stand there holding huge
banners to catch drivers' atten-
tion. At the Kfar Hayarok junc-
tion in the center of the country,
three students from the Beit El
settlement yeshiva were man-
ning the post for Mr. Netanyahu.
Asked if he was comfortable
with Mr. Netanyahu's new
stance, Avichai Aloni, 19, said:
"We understand. He was forced
into it by reality." Reality, for Mr.
Aloni, was the public's unwill-
ingness to send the army back
into Gaza, Rarnallah, Jenin and
the other Palestinian cities.
"I trust Netanyahu to know
how to salvage whatever can be
salvaged after the mess Labor's
gotten us into," he continued.
"The main difference between
Peres and Netanyahu is that
Peres kisses up to the gentiles,
while Netanyahu will deal with
them from strength. Netanyahu
has much more pride, he's much
more of a Jew."
Asked if he believed Mr.
Arafat would ever agree to give
Israel "secure peace" on Mr. Ne-
tanyahu's terms, Mr. Aloni
replied, "Netanyahu will force
Arafat to do it. He'll do it with
strong measures, like closing the
territories and not allowing the
Palestinians to work in Israel."
Aside from supporters in
Yemin Yisrael ("The Israeli
Right"), a small party running
for Knesset, all factions within
the ideological right-wing move-
ment are behind Mr. Netanyahu,
said Yehiel Leiter, a key tacti-
cian in the YESHA (Judea,
Samaria and Gaza) Council.
The few who have turned
against Mr. Netanyahu are "dog-
matists," he said. "I'm very much
against people breathing down
Bibi's right shoulder," Mr. Leit-
er stressed. "Evidently they pre-
fer that we spend the next four
years in the oppostion.
"We have no problem with a
government under Netanyahu
meeting with. Arafat," Mr. Leit-
er continued, explaining that he
expected such a government "to
treat Arafat as a war criminal,
as an enemy ... not as a head of
state."
Such an approach would seem
to spell an end to Israel's work-
ing relationship with the PA.
Wouldn't this force Israeli troops
back into their cities?
"If we're correct that Oslo is
a process leading to more and
more terror, then any Israeli gov-
ernment, under Netanyahu or
Peres, will be left with no choice
but to reenter these areas," Mr.
Leiter said. •
And if Mr. Netanyahu proves
less staunch than expected in his
dealings with Mr. Arafat, Mr.
Leiter concluded, "It's quite pos-
sible that once Netanyahu gets
elected, please God, that we will
once again find ourselves in the
opposition. But this time at least
we'll know that we have a friend
at the helm." 7
