The Men's Club of Congregation Shaarey Zedek
is proud to announce that

TIME IS MONEY, DON'T WASTE YOURS.

MR. JOEL D. TAUBER
RENOWNED COMMUNAL and INTERNATIONAL LEADER

patriates there for between two
to four years.
"I am hoping to touch these
people in a profound Jewish way
so that they will leave us
strengthened and even become
active in their home communi-
ties," he says.
These different positions also
are reflected by the directors of
the Jerusalem Fellows. The
dilemma is how to transmit Jew-
ish knowledge to the bulk of the
Jewish people, and in doing so,
which viewpoint to endorse.
"We have accepted as Fellows
the very Orthodox to the very sec-
ular and anything in between,"
Mr. Posen says. "To be effective
worldwide we have to accept that
there are all kinds of views as to
how one can be Jewish."
Professor Fox points out that
this is one of the few places in the
world where educators of Ortho-
dox, Conservative, Reform and
secular commitments work and
study together and even like each
other.
In the symposium, Shlomo
Avineri, professor of political sci-
ence at the Hebrew University,
said there never has been one au-
thority in Jewish religious life,
but rather certain schools which
were acceptable to the majority.
He maintained that the crisis in
intra-Jewish relations today is
not a lack of unity but an inabil-
ity to reach a compromise.
Professor David Hartman of
the Hartman Institute advocates
showing an intensity for Torah
fueled by an alternative vocab-
ulary.
"A function of a Torah educa-
tion is to have many rooms," he
said. "I believe a passion for
Torah can be nurtured in a new
world. The haredim have decid-
ed it can't be."
Eliyahu Birnbaum, a Fellow
and chief rabbi of Uruguay, de-
scribed himself as a modern Or-
thodox rabbi, with the accent
very much on modern. Pluralism,
he said, is part of the secret of the
Jewish people — but he qualified
this with a notion of maximum
and minimum plurality, giving
the impression it was minimum
plurality he favored.
As to whether the Jerusalem
Fellows will actually have any
impact, Felix Posen argues that
all the Fellows have had an in-
ordinate influence on Jewish ed-
ucation in countries throughout
the Diaspora, but admits that 90
graduates in 14 years is a mere
drop in the ocean.
He's hoping to beef up the pro-
gram and send out a few hun-
dred leaders within the next 20
years.
"As we expand, our graduates
will be the main executors who
will help us find the roots in our
efforts to preserve Jewish life," he
says. 'This is our self-appointed
task, and though we won't solve
the problem overnight, we might
shift it." ❑
