(repeated) thoughts. Participat-
ing in these actions is a way for
the people to maintain control of
their lives. In more extreme cas-
es, they might lose this sense of
control, which will affect their
daily lives," Dr. Swerdlow-Freed
said.
Although most bad habits are
not this serious, and some types
of obsessive-compulsive disor-
ders can be controlled with med-
ication, Dr. Swerdlow-Freed said
that habits can be expressions of
other sorts of anxiety-disorder
problems.
Dr. Leonard Sahn, a neurolo-
gist based in Southfield, said
habits are rarely manifestations
of neurological problems, but
they might be, especially if the
behaviors become self-destruc-
tive. He refers to patients who

Is there any reason why indi-
viduals choose one habit over an-
other? Dr. Sahn isn't sure.
But one thing's clear. In order
to kick a habit, a person must be
aware of it. Every physician
agrees with that strategy, but
being aware doesn't mean a per-
son is necessarily cured, said
hypno-therapist Elaine Kissel in
Southfield.
"A person can change (his or
her behavior) temporarily, but
you must know the source of the
problem, or understand the foun-
dation of the anxiety on a
conscious or subconscious level
in order to even begin to curb the
habit." ❑
