for Congress (in 1992), we were
hoping he would succeed me in
the state Senate."

Although Democrats typically
don't get elected in this district,
Mr. Brickner believes he has a
chance to win. The key, he main-
tains, is to get the Democrats out
to vote. He also believes being
the only Jewish candidate
could give him an edge
because of the district's
large number of Jew-
ish constituents.
"In a special election,
yes, I think a Democrat can
win," said Mr. Brickner, a
member of the Farmington
Hills Planning Commission "In
a regular election, probably not."
The winner of the May 13 Re-
publican primary will face Mr.
Brickner three weeks later in a
June 4 election.
In the short period of time
these candidates have had to
campaign, not only are they run-
ning against each other, they also
are racing against the clock in
hopes of making their names and
positions known.
Rep. Dobb, a certified public
accountant first elected to office
in 1990, believes one of the key
issues facing the district is "pro-
tecting the integrity and goals of
Proposal A. This includes mak-
ing sure funding for education is
distributed equitably."
Rep. Dobb said the Legislature
will need to address transporta-
tion issues, including long-range
planning and providing money to
fix the state's potholes. She also
suggests looking at county road
commissions and making sure
they provide the most efficient
ways to deliver services.
